Ear Trainer

You can't fix what you can't name. Most engineers reach for the wrong band for years — and never find out why the mix keeps fighting them.

Two tests, one game. Train your ears on EQ frequencies and feedback ringing — earn XP, level up your rank, keep a daily streak, and take the daily challenge. Real DSP, in your browser.

QuestionsNeon Audio
What is the difference between the two tests?

They train the same ear for two different jobs. Frequency ID is the mixing one: it hides an EQ boost or cut somewhere in the sound and asks which band moved, so you flip between the untouched version and the changed one and name the difference. That is what you are doing when a mix sounds wrong and you have to find where before you can fix it. Feedback ID is the live one: a single frequency is ringing on its own with no music under it, and you name it. That is the sound of a room starting to howl, where knowing it is around 2 kHz tells you which fader to reach for — and you get about a second to decide.

Can I practice on my own music?

Yes. Drop a WAV or MP3 into the Source panel and it becomes the test signal, looped. Training on material you already know well is the fastest way to make the skill transfer to real work, because you are not also learning what the source is supposed to sound like.

Do I need studio headphones?

They help, particularly below 200 Hz where laptop speakers simply do not reproduce the band you are being asked to name. But consistency matters more than quality: use the same system every session, because you are partly learning that system's response as well as your own hearing.

How much does it cost?

The demo rounds are free with no signup. The full trainer — all bands, both tests, adaptive difficulty and progress tracking — unlocks with your email address. Nothing you play or upload ever leaves your browser.
